Sunnymere Sunnymere is a non-profit organization which strives to provide gracious living accommodations for senior citizens. Based on the belief that human dignity is paramount, facilities are provided at moderate, subsidized prices and accommodations are maintained at a level responsive to the changing needs of the community. The seed was planted in 1895 with a gift of a house and lot from Harriet Colby. The Old Ladies' Home of Aurora was established. Another Auroran, Clara Bowron bequeathed her entire estate to establish the Bowron Home. Realizing the necessity of a larger home for a growing community, the Old Ladies' Home and the Bowron Home combined resources to build Sunnymere on the land given by Jessie Farnsworth. The name Sunnymere was selected as a memorial to her, and the first residents moved in on July 16, 1939. Sunnymere has undergone many changes since those early years. Today, Sunnymere is a licensed sheltered care home for seniors 65 years and older. Sunnymere has always provided residential care for Independent seniors. In 1998, due to a recognized need for assisted living services at a reasonable cost, Sunnymere began providing assisted living. Bright Oaks of Aurora Bright Oaks of Aurora, Illinois, is an assisted living community that offers family-style living. The community is situated on the banks of the Fox River, offering community members a serene setting just outside of Chicago. The suburban town of Aurora offers visitors and residents lots to do from museums, to a walking a trail right along the Fox River, a historical theatre, a zoo, plenty of parks, and a casino. The grounds have lush landscaping, and the living areas were designed to be secure and safe for seniors with varying levels of mobility. The facility offers healthy, chef-prepared meals in a sizeable dining room, plus snacks and drinks 24 hours a day. The facility has several community living rooms and a 'Celebration Center'. The happenings at Bright Oaks of Aurora are typically chosen by family residents and the community’s Family Advisory Councils. Staff community members will then provide customized happenings based on the family residents’ recommendations. Typical happenings at Bright Oaks include cooking, knitting, games like bridge and bingo, and arts and crafts. Bright Oaks staff also organizes regular community-wide events and outings.
